Boston Boatworks LLC; cover, cost and conditions

Mark Lindsay and Scott Smith founded Boston Boatworks in 1996 to build light racing sailboats, in a shed beneath the Tobin Bridge close to downtown Boston. Then Bob Johnstone, a co-founder of J/Boats, asked the yard for a powerboat for himself and his wife Mary. That request became MJM Yachts, set up in 2002 by Bob, Mary and their son Peter Johnstone, with Boston Boatworks as builder. Doug Zurn of Marblehead draws the boats, and the small z in every model name is his. Construction is epoxy and cored laminate under vacuum. A Downeast profile with a sailor's eye, a slim hull and a generous cockpit make an MJM easy to recognise. MJM is now moving most of its production to North Carolina.

Our model records list nine designs, all filed as motor yachts. The first lines begin in 2007: the 29z, 34z, 36z and 40z. At 9.79 metres the 29z is the smallest, at 16.87 metres the 53z the largest. Between them sit the 35z at 11.31 metres, the 3z at 11.63 metres, the 43z at 14.11 metres and the 50z at 16.48 metres. The 29z, 34z and 36z end in 2019, the 40z in 2020 and the 50z in 2022, while four lines run into the most recent build years: the 3z, 35z, 43z and 53z. Five of the nine designs are longer than twelve metres.

Light epoxy construction is stiff and efficient, and it rewards careful ownership. Look for impact damage in the cored areas, check that deck fittings have been properly bedded, and ask for engine hours and service records, since many of these boats carry large outboards or diesels and are driven hard. Joystick and helm electronics should be tested on the water. Boats bought in New England and shipped to Europe need their electrics and paperwork checked for local rules. A well kept MJM is usually a day and weekend boat for fast coastal runs rather than a long range cruiser.
