Worth knowing

Bounty Boats S C A (UK) Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Bounty Boats was one of the many yards on the Riverside Estate at Brundall, on the Norfolk Broads in the east of England. That landscape of rivers and shallow lakes shaped what it built: glassfibre cabin cruisers and river cruisers, including updated versions of the Elysian 27 first designed by Appleyard Lincoln. The name is tied above all to the Sovereign range of river cruisers, offered in several sizes. Other boats left the yard under different names, Buccaneer among them, and there was a link to Aquafibre, several of whose designs were sold as Bounty boats. One point avoids confusion: this Sovereign has nothing to do with the Australian cruiser builder of the same name, nor with Sovereign Boats of Shoreham, who made dinghies.

Our model records list four designs, all classed as motor yachts and falling into two distinct periods. The Buccaneer 37 is recorded from 1974 to 1981 at 11.28 metres, and the Buccaneer 44 follows at 13.56 metres from 1977 to 1984. About a decade later come the Sovereigns: the Sovereign 28 at 9.18 metres from 1993 to 1999 and the Sovereign 34 at 10.39 metres from 1993 to 2001. None of the lines reaches into recent build years; the youngest recorded boat dates from 2001. Lengths run from just over nine to over 13.5 metres, a generous size for inland water.

Broads cruisers lead a gentle life compared with sea boats, but age catches up with them all the same. On a Buccaneer from the seventies, look at the windows and their frames, the deck fittings and any wooden trim for rot, and ask when the engines were last overhauled or replaced. Osmosis blisters on older glassfibre hulls are worth checking with the boat ashore. River boats spend a lot of time alongside and in locks, so rubbing strakes take a beating and the hull sides often show it. A Sovereign from the nineties is younger, yet the same checks apply: wiring, fuel lines, seacocks and the condition of the canopy if one is fitted.
