Bourne; cover, cost and conditions
The Bourne 35 belongs to the Norfolk Broads, the network of rivers and lakes in the east of England. Rip Martins drew the hull in the early 1960s, and a Nottingham firm, Bourne Plastics, moulded it; the first hull was delivered in 1962. Martins first marketed the shape as the Griffin 35, but the moulder's name soon stuck. Bourne never sold complete boats. It supplied the glassfibre hull, and Broads yards such as Moores, Herbert Woods, Ernest Collins of Wroxham and Aston Boats at Loddon added the superstructure and fit-out. That is why two Bourne 35s rarely look alike.
Our model records list one design under Bourne: the Bourne 35, a 10.5 metre motor yacht with build years from 1981 to 1987. These are late examples of a hull that had already been on the water for two decades, and nothing in the records reaches into recent production. The sources give 10.7 metres for most finished versions, with individual yards at 10.5 or 10.8 metres depending on how the superstructure was built. The original boats paired a glassfibre hull with a wooden superstructure. Aquafibre later moulded the same hull, and several old Bourne 35s have since swapped their timber tops for a modern Aquafibre 35 superstructure.
Buying a Bourne 35 means buying one yard's interpretation of a shared hull, so the first job is to find out who finished it and whether the top is still original. A timber superstructure on a glassfibre hull needs watching where the two meet: soft wood around the deck joint, windows and hatches is common on older boats. Check the hull for osmosis after decades in fresh water, and look at the engine beds and stern gear. Broads cruisers lead a gentle life at low speed, but they also see a lot of locks, moorings and bumps against staithes, so rubbing strakes and fenders tell their own story.
