The name Brandsma has long stood for boatbuilding in Friesland. The family built wooden working craft at first and went over to iron and steel around 1900; later the leisure boat became the centre of the business. Today Brandsma Jachten sits at Sneek, in the middle of the Frisian lakes, and builds steel motor yachts. You recognise the boats by the heavy steel hull with its pronounced sheer, the solid bulwark and the tall wheelhouse; the Nordzeekotter models follow the pattern of the Dutch fishing cutter, with an upright stem and a heavy forefoot.

Our model records list 47 Brandsma models, 45 of them motor yachts and two sailing yachts. Build years start in 1974 and run into current production. Forty seven series are recorded: the Luna in 30, 34, 37, 40 and 44; the Nordzeekotter in 35, 38, 42 and 45 and as 1100 AK and 1200 AK; the Mondial 37 and 45; the Federick 47 also as Salon; the Agder 1100; and the older numbered models 860, 960, 1050 and more, each as OK for an open aft deck and AK for a closed one. Lengths run from 8.6 to 14.1 metres, half the models between 10.4 and 12.3 metres.

Steel is the thing to understand about these boats. It rusts wherever the protection is broken, and by preference where nobody looks: under the sole, behind tanks, around through hull fittings. A survey with plate thickness readings therefore tells more about an older steel boat than its year of build. They also live mostly on inland water, where locks and tight moorings shape the wear.
