Branson Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Branson Boats was a yard at Crowland in the east of England that built steel trawler yachts to designs by Gunter Marine Design of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A broker's listing for a 1997 Branson Trawler 45 shows what defines them: steel hull, steel deck and steel superstructure, a multi hard chine hull rather than a rounded one, and teak on the aft deck. The boats were drawn for inland and coastal waters. A lantern mast and wide side decks suit canals, rivers and locks, and the layout works as a home afloat all year round. A Branson is easy to pick out by its angular, chined steel hull and broad side decks.
Our model records list two Branson designs, both motor yachts and both 15.18 metres long: the Marlin 46 and the Trawler 46. The Marlin 46 is listed from 1994 to 2003, the Trawler 46 from 1995 to 2003. Both lines end in the same year, and neither reaches the most recent build years. At just over 15 metres these yachts sit at a size that still fits many locks on inland waterways while offering enough room for longer coastal passages. Anyone looking for a Branson today is buying second hand, and the youngest of them were built more than two decades ago.
Steel is forgiving, but it has to be watched. Rust starts where paint is chipped, under fittings and in bilges that stay damp, so a hull survey with ultrasonic thickness readings is the first step before buying a used steel yacht. Anodes need regular renewal, and the electrical system should be checked for stray currents, especially on boats that spend long periods connected to shore power in a marina. Teak on the aft deck needs its seams kept tight. On a boat used as a liveaboard, ventilation and insulation matter as much as the engines, since condensation inside a steel hull works quietly from within.
