Worth knowing
Broadwater Boat Co; cover, cost and conditions
The Broadwater Boat Company built boats in Mayo, Maryland, not far from Annapolis, from 1956 until 1980. Dave Ritchie founded it. The yard produced cabin cruisers in marine plywood over mahogany frames and aimed at an affordable price rather than at luxury, with a range running from 17 to 36 feet. Among the types owners remember most fondly are the Little Mariner, later also offered in glassfibre, and the Bay Breeze, a flybridge cabin cruiser. The wooden construction is what sets a Broadwater apart. Production ended decades ago, yet the boats still have a loyal following, and owners swap restoration experience with one another to this day.
Our model records list two Broadwater designs, both with build years from 1971 to 1979, which places them in the final decade of the yard. The Bay Breeze is recorded as a motor yacht of 10.3 metres and the Little Mariner as a motorboat of 6.6 metres, a difference of 3.7 metres. Neither design reaches into recent build years, and the latest year on record is 1979. Every boat of the brand on the market today is therefore around 45 years old or more, and most are found in the United States, where the yard sold its boats.
Plywood boats reward an owner who keeps fresh water out. On any Broadwater, check the chines, the transom and the area around fastenings for soft spots, and look at the edges of the plywood where the veneer can lift once water gets in. Good ventilation under a boat tent and a dry bilge make a real difference over the years. Ask whether a Little Mariner is built in wood or in the later glassfibre version, because the two need different checks. On a Bay Breeze, the structure carrying the flybridge and its rails is worth a close look, as are the engine bearers and the condition of the original wiring.
