Bruijs Yachtbouw BV; cover, cost and conditions

Bruijs Jachtbouw was founded in 1957 by Cees Bruijs and is based in Bergen op Zoom in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The yard builds steel motor yachts. Its Vlet, a compact displacement boat in the Dutch tradition, became a classic, and from the 1990s the yard turned its attention to the kotter. The Spiegelkotter that followed is the boat most people link with the name: a steel cruiser with a flat transom, a strong bow and sea-kindly lines.

Our records hold 16 Bruijs models, all motor yachts. Nine are Spiegelkotters: the 10.00 Cabrio plus the 10.00/10.60, 11.50, 12.80 and 14.95, each as ak and ok. Six carry the Vlet name: the 9.70 ok, the 10.70 and 12.70 as ak and ok, and the Vlet 40.00 ak. The suffixes are Dutch, ak for aft cabin and ok for open cockpit. The oldest model is the Bruijs 1100 Fly, built from 1977 to 1983. The other lines start in 1999 or 2000 and end in 2007 or 2008, while the Spiegelkotter 10.00 Cabrio runs to 2016. Lengths run from 9.9 metres (Vlet 9.70 ok) to 14.95 metres (Spiegelkotter 14.95).

Steel yachts like these are heavy, stable boats for rivers, lakes, canals and the coast, and many owners live aboard for weeks. Their long life depends on the coating: an annual haul-out to check paint, anodes and the waterline pays off. Inside, good ventilation keeps condensation away from the steel behind the panelling.
