Broom is an English yard on the Norfolk Broads, the branching network of waterways in the east of England. Charles John Broom bought the works at Brundall on the north bank of the River Yare in 1898, where he had previously worked himself, and began by building sailing cruisers. A hire fleet followed from 1912. After the First World War his sons carried the business on and turned it towards motor cruisers. You recognise the boats by the flat, very low silhouette, the freeboard carried well down and the enclosed helm: shapes that come from rivers with low bridges rather than from the sea.

Sixty series are recorded: the Coupe models 30 and 35, also as hardtops, the numbered range with 365, 370, 395, 425, 430, 450 and 455, the 35 CL, 39 KL and 39 2Plus2, and the 50 in the AC, AD and OS versions. From earlier years come boats such as the Broom 9.70 and the Broom 10.70 Sceptre and the sailing boats Aqua 30 and Aquarius. Lengths run from 4.1 to 16.2 metres, half the models between 10.4 and 12.8 metres.

The water these boats were drawn for is the thing to understand about them. A river cruiser works between locks, bridges and tight moorings, and that produces a different kind of wear from the open sea: rubbed topsides, bumped rubbing strakes and the occasional touch on a shallow channel edge. The low superstructure that looks unusual alongside a coastal boat is there for one reason, which is the bridges.
