Worth knowing
C. Van Lent & Zonen B.V.; cover, cost and conditions
C. Van Lent & Zonen is a Dutch yacht yard on the island of Kaag. According to Feadship its roots go back to 1849, when ship's carpenter Hein Akerboom built flat-bottomed boats in Lisse; the Kaag site followed in 1877, and in 1917 Cees van Lent and Hein Akerboom set up Jachtwerf De Kaag there. In 1949 the van Lent yard was one of the original members of Feadship, the export association of Dutch yacht builders. Early boats were wooden, later ones steel and aluminium. With the yachts in our records the number in the name usually gives the length in feet.
Our model records hold eight motor yachts from C. Van Lent & Zonen, built between 1962 and 1981. The core is the Diesel-Yacht in five sizes: the 56 at 17.08 metres, the 73 at 22.3, the 114 at 34.8, the 121 at 37 and the 146 at 45 metres. They start in 1966, the 121 in 1967, and all end in 1975. The 17.04 metre Glattdeck-Yacht 56 is the oldest, listed from 1962 to 1975. The van Lent 71 measures 22.3 metres and runs from 1965 to 1973. The 12.5 metre Bonito is the smallest and, from 1965 to 1981, the longest running. Three yachts exceed 30 metres.
Yachts of this size and age live on a fixed berth and come out of the water by crane or slipway for maintenance and winter. Classic Dutch yachts from the sixties and seventies need regular hull surveys, careful attention to old wiring and plumbing, and a crew or skipper who knows the boat. Many have been refitted, so the documented history of each yacht matters as much as the original design.
