Caliari; cover, cost and conditions
The name Caliari points to the Italian yacht designer Paolo Caliari, born in 1932, who died in 2014. Over several decades he drew motor yachts for a long list of Italian yards, Baglietto, Mochi, Sanlorenzo and Tecnomarine among them, and his longest partnership was with Cantieri Navali dell Arno and their Leopard range. In the late eighties and early nineties he ran a brand of his own, Caliari Yacht, produced together with Mochi. Sales listings credit the Coanda yachts directly to Caliari for design and naval architecture. They carry the low, stretched and sporty profile typical of many Italian motor yachts of that era.
Our model records list three designs, all motor yachts. Two of them run from 1980 to 1987: the Caliari Coanda 16 at 16 metres and the Caliari CY 20, at 20.5 metres the longest yacht under the name. The Coanda 63 followed from 1988 to 1994 and measures 19.55 metres. The records therefore span 1980 to 1994, and no line reaches into recent build years. Every yacht sits between 16 and a little over 20 metres; there are no small boats under this name.
Any Coanda on the market today is more than thirty years old, so its story depends on how it has been kept. Teak decks of that age often need recaulking or replacement, and the original engines may have been rebuilt or swapped. A buyer should ask for engine hours, the record of any repower, a recent survey of hull and running gear and the state of the wiring, which on yachts of the eighties was often extended piece by piece. Many of these boats have spent their lives in the Mediterranean, where sun and salt are hard on varnish and upholstery.
