Canados builds motor yachts at Ostia, Rome's port at the mouth of the Tiber. The yard began in 1946, when a group of carpenters built wooden boats on the bank of the Tiber on the site of a former seaplane base. The first boats were official craft: in 1953 the house delivered eight patrol boats to the coast guard. The move to yacht building dates from that period. Since 2016 the yard has had a new owner, who introduced the Gladiator range in 2018. You recognise the yachts by the very long smooth topsides, the deeply cut bow and the low superstructure.

Our model records list 40 Canados models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 1979 and run into current production. Forty series are recorded: the Canados 808, 888 Evolution, 969, 110 Classic and 122 Caesar and the older 24, 26, 30, 60, 72 and 76; the Gladiator range with 411 Carbon Series, 431, 431 Speedster, 493 Grand, 631 Next, 822, 901 and 919 RD Series; and the Oceanic range with 76 GT, 81 GT and 100 Fisherman. Lengths run from 13 to 42.7 metres, half the models between 23.7 and 30.5 metres. This is a yard without small boats.

A house that began with patrol boats for a coast guard tends to keep something of that in its yachts. The hulls are drawn for speed and sea keeping rather than for volume, which is why a Canados of a given length has less accommodation and more waterline than a flybridge yacht of the same size, and why the line looks longer than it measures.
