Coastal Craft; cover, cost and conditions

Coastal Craft was founded in 1996 in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. It began with hand-built aluminium workboats for logging, fishing and whale watching. In 2001 two customers asked for the space below decks of one of those workboats to be finished as a yacht, and that request shaped the current range: motor yachts with tough aluminium hulls and comfortable interiors, made for rough coastal water. The yard was early to fit Volvo Penta IPS drives into aluminium hulls, which shows in names such as 400 IPS and 560 IPS.

Our records list 16 Coastal Craft models, 15 motor yachts and one motorboat. Build years start in 2007 with the 30' Open, the 300, 370 and 420 and the 400 and 450 IPS; the 560 IPS follows in 2010. A second generation with two digit names starts with the 65 Concord in 2012 and adds the 40, 45 and 56, the 30 and 33 Profish, the 33 Express, the 42 Express Fish and the 41 T. Four lines reach the latest years: 33 Express, 33 Profish, 41 T and 42 Express Fish. Lengths run from 9.14 metres (30 Profish) to 20.37 metres (65 Concord).

These boats are built for the Pacific Northwest: cold water, floating logs, long distances between harbours and fishing trips far from shore. Aluminium hulls need care where different metals meet, and the anodes and the bonding system deserve regular checks. A heated pilothouse and a good radar make them as useful in autumn as in summer.
