Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding; cover, cost and conditions

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding is a Cornish yard based in Falmouth, founded by Dave Cockwell in 1996. It works from two sites, Falmouth itself and the Mylor Creek Boatyard, and does both restoration and new building. Its Duchy motor launches are classically styled, semi production boats finished to each owner's wishes, and the yard later took over the Norfolk brand Hardy Marine as well. The Duchy 27 grew out of the Aquila 27, an Andrew Wolstenholme design that Cockwells acquired and reworked in the manner of a traditional launch, with tumblehome in the topsides aft. That sweep, teak in the cockpit and English oak below make a Duchy easy to spot.

Our model records list three designs, all with build years from 2019 to 2023. The Duchy 21 is entered as a motorboat of 6.2 metres, the Duchy 27 as a motor yacht of 8.2 metres and the Duchy 35 as a motor yacht of 11.48 metres. The range therefore runs from an open day boat to a weekend cruiser that the yard offers with one or two double cabins. Beneath the woodwork the construction is thoroughly modern: the Duchy 27 hull is an epoxy infused sandwich of E glass and foam, and power comes from a diesel with a conventional shaft drive. None of the three reaches into the most recent build years in our data; the last entries are from 2023.

A Duchy is a young boat with a great deal of handwork, and that handwork wants looking after. Teak in the cockpit needs gentle cleaning rather than hard scrubbing, and varnished trim lasts far longer with a fresh coat each year. The shaft drive is simple and robust: check the stern gland, cutless bearing and engine mounts at every lift out. On a used boat, look at the oak joinery for water stains near hatches and windows. These launches are mostly used for river trips, estuary picnics and coastal weekends, so many have low engine hours and gentle lives.

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.

For the Duchy 27, Duchy 35 by Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
