Coecles Harbor Marina & Boatyard sits on Shelter Island, tucked between the two forks at the eastern end of Long Island, New York. The family has owned and run it since 1973, and the Needham family's next generation is now in charge. At heart it is a marina and service yard, with boatbuilding run as a separate division called CH Marine. The building side made its name with the Shelter Island Runabout, a boat prompted by the musician Billy Joel and drawn by designer Doug Zurn in 1996. The yard builds runabouts from 30 to 38 feet, one model at a time and shaped around what each buyer wants.
Our model records list two designs, both entered as motor yachts and both from 2005 onwards: the Shelter Island Nomad at 9.2 metres and the Shelter Island Runabout at 11.58 metres. Both lines reach into the most recent build years. The Nomad is another Doug Zurn design; the boat tested by the trade press had twin Yanmar diesels, a shoal draft drive, a head with shower, a V-berth and a galley, plus a transom that opens to serve as swim platform and boarding door. The two are just under 2.4 metres apart, which spans almost exactly the 30 to 38 foot range the yard works in.

On a used Shelter Island boat, ask for the original build specification and the service log of the diesels, and check the shoal draft running gear for wear from sandy bottoms. The opening transom on the Nomad has hinges and seals that should close tight. Varnished trim and deck fittings show quickly how a boat was kept. These runabouts are made for day trips and short hops along sheltered coasts, so many have modest hours, but salt water and a long season still leave marks on engines and wiring.
