Condor Yachting; cover, cost and conditions

Condor Yachting comes from Kerkdriel in the Dutch province of Gelderland, a village on the river Maas. Broker listings also give the yard's name as Condor Yachtbau. Its field is steel motor yachts of the kind that suit Dutch inland waters and travel well beyond them. Two examples show what the boats are like: the Condor Genesis of 1998 is a steel yacht with an enclosed wheelhouse and a teak interior, while the Condor 105 Fly has one helm inside and a second on the flybridge. The three-digit type numbers and the trawler models are the easiest way to recognise the brand.

Our model records hold 19 designs, all of them motor yachts. The core is the numbered range: the Condor 105 and 105 FLY, 108, 118 Fantome, 127, 130, 135 Cabrio, 135 Genesis, 139 Crosswind and 140 Commodore, plus the Condor 185, at 18.6 metres the largest design. Five trawlers complete the programme, the Silversea Trawler, the Transatl.Trawler and the Trawler 15.00, 16.20 and 17.50, between 14.5 and 18.2 metres. The list also includes the Carat, at 8.6 metres the smallest yacht, the Condor 50 S and the Crosswind 48. The oldest entry is the Condor 105 from 1985, and the last designs end in 2007, so none reaches the most recent build years.

Steel hulls last for generations when they are looked after, which is why many yachts from the eighties and nineties are still cruising. A used steel yacht calls for an ultrasonic thickness survey, a close look at the bilges and at areas behind panels and tanks where condensation collects, and a check of the anodes and the coating below the waterline. Teak interiors and decks need oil and attention to the seams. On the trawlers, the long-range tanks, the engine room and the steering gear deserve time during a viewing. Canal cruising brings lock walls and bridges, so rubbing strakes and fenders often show the history of a boat.
