Worth knowing
Consonant Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Consonant Yachts is a Dutch yard from Vriezenveen that began in 1995 by building launches. In 1999 it developed its own motor yacht type with Willem Nieland, the Kuster. North-Line Yachts of Harlingen took the yard over in 2015, and the business has since traded as Kuster Yachts. A Kuster is easy to spot: a sturdy profile borrowed from small coastal freighters, with a high bow and a wheelhouse. The model names pair a letter with a number close to the length in feet, so the A-31 measures 9.4 metres and the A-47 about 14.5.
Our records list six Consonant designs, all Kuster motor yachts: the A-31, A-38, A-42, A-45 and A-47 plus the C-42. The A-38 comes first in 2001, four more follow in 2002 and the A-47 arrives in 2012. All six run up to the most recent build years. Lengths go from 9.4 metres for the A-31 to 14.54 metres for the A-47.
Kusters are displacement boats for canals, rivers, lakes and sheltered coastal waters. Their wheelhouses make them comfortable in spring and autumn, which stretches the season well beyond summer. Locks and narrow canals call for good fenders and a working bow thruster, and many owners lift the boat out over winter or move it into a shed.
