Worth knowing
Construcciones Navales Altair S.L.; cover, cost and conditions
Construcciones Navales Altair S.L. is a Spanish yard that builds motorboats under the Altair name. The Spanish yard directory lists three kinds of boat from it: day cruisers, motor yachts with cabins and fishing boats. Hulls are moulded in glassfibre. At the top of the range sits the Zafir 42, about 45 feet long with a beam of roughly 13 feet and a draught of only 0.87 metres. It was also delivered with three cabins and two heads, and one 2008 boat offered for sale runs on Volvo Penta IPS 500 drives. The programme falls into two families, the numbered Altair models and the larger Zafir line.
Our model records list eleven designs, all entered as motor yachts, from 7.6 to 13.6 metres. The oldest entries date from 1999: the Altair 8 in three versions, closed, Fly and open, each 8.3 metres long, plus the Altair 10 at 10.3 metres. In 2001 came the Altair 7.5, the smallest at 7.6 metres, and the Altair 12.8 at just under 12 metres; 2004 brought the Altair 8.6 and 8.60 CR, both 8.6 metres, together with the Zafir 38 and Zafir 42. The Zafir 32 at 10.2 metres followed in 2005. Nearly every line ends in 2012, with only the Altair 10 and Zafir 32 listed into 2013. None reaches the most recent build years, and five measure more than ten metres.
Any Altair on the market today is a used boat with more than a decade behind it. On yachts of this age the shaft or drive seals, engine mounts and exhaust elbows deserve a surveyor's eye, and on boats with IPS the service history of the pods matters a great deal. Flybridge versions carry extra weight high up, so check the bonding of the upper structure and the state of the canopy. Many of these boats have spent years in Mediterranean marinas, where sun and heat take their toll on gelcoat, upholstery and windows. A survey before purchase, with the hull out of the water, shows osmosis, keel damage and tired antifouling that no brochure mentions.
