Alalunga is the name behind a family of motor yachts from Santa Margherita Ligure on the Ligurian coast. Mario Spertini founded the yard in 1961 to build sport fishing boats, and in 1963 the first Alalunga fisherman of 14 metres was launched. The first Alalunga motor yacht followed in 1970, quicker and more comfortable inside than the fishing boats before it. Spertini later worked with the designer Paolo Caliari, and in 1985 that partnership produced the first 18 metre Alalunga in glassfibre. Until the mid nineties much of the building was in wood; one magazine portrait describes a hull of triple layered mahogany. The yard has since closed, while many of its boats are still cruising.

Our model records hold nine designs, all listed as motor yachts. Six belong to the seventies and eighties: the Alalunga 18 from 1974 and the 20, 22, 23, 27 and 30 from 1975, built until 1982 or a little later, with the Alalunga 27 running on to 1986. After a gap come the Alalunga 65 from 1994 to 2001, the Alalunga 78 from 2002 to 2017 and the Alalunga 85 Sports from 2003 to 2014. Lengths run from 17.8 metres for the Alalunga 18 to 30.5 metres for the Alalunga 30. Only two designs stay under 20 metres, three exceed 25 metres. No line reaches the most recent build years.

Owning an Alalunga today means owning a used yacht with a past, often wooden and more than four decades old. A wooden hull of that age wants regular checks of planking, fastenings and caulking, and a dry, ventilated winter berth. On a survey before purchase, look closely at the engine room, the shaft lines and the condition of the deck joinery, and ask for the maintenance history. These yachts were drawn for the open Mediterranean, so they are often used for longer coastal passages rather than short harbour trips, which makes a well kept engine and generator record worth as much as the varnish.
