Couach builds motor yachts in France. The yard lies at Gujan-Mestras on the Bassin d'Arcachon south west of Bordeaux. Albert Couach founded the works on the basin in 1897 and began by building marine engines; his grandson Guy Couach joined in 1946 and turned the house towards fast boats. Since the 1960s the yard has worked in composites, and in 1970 the Aramat was launched as one of the first yachts with Kevlar in the laminate. You recognise the boats by the sharp deep forefoot, the low silhouette and the long flat superstructure.
Our model records list 77 Couach models, 66 of them motor yachts, six sailing yachts and five motorboats. Build years start in 1965 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded: the S models 1100 and 1500, the 2000 Sport, the Fly line from the 2300 to the 5000, the Open models 2600 and 2800, the 4200 Lounge and the 1300 Hornet. The number gives the approximate length in centimetres, so a Couach 3500 Fly measures around 35 metres. Lengths run from 5.8 to 49.9 metres, half the models between 12.4 and 26.2 metres.
The construction is what sets these boats apart. A laminate carrying Kevlar or carbon fibre cannot be judged like ordinary fibreglass and cannot be repaired like it either: the fibres behave differently under impact and a yard that has not worked the material will struggle with it. How the hull is built therefore belongs in the boat's papers, not only its length and year.
