Worth knowing
CPC Chantier naval; cover, cost and conditions
CPC is short for Construction Polyester du Centre, a yard in Digoin, Burgundy, right in the middle of the French canal network. It grew out of the Espade yard, taken over in 1989; from 1990 it traded as RECLA and since 1996 as CPC. The yard builds boats for rivers and canals with polyester hulls, designs everything in house and builds to order, with hulls and joinery in wood or polyester made by its own team of cabinetmakers. Alongside the Tarpon boats the range includes Péniche models styled on old working barges, a Classic line, wheelchair-friendly boats in the Access line, passenger vessels and floating homes. A fire in October 2020 destroyed half of the premises.
Our model records list one design from the yard, the Tarpon 32 motor cruiser at 9.73 metres, with build years from 2019 to 2023. She is the smallest boat in the Tarpon range, which runs in four sizes from 32 to 49 feet. Her proportions are typical of a canal boat: 3.91 metres wide, only 0.65 metres of draft and around six tonnes. Below deck there are two cabins and two heads, and the yard offered Nanni diesels from 40 to 115 horsepower. As the entry ends in 2023, none of the brand's lines reaches the most recent build years.
Life on the canals is slow but busy: locks every few kilometres, low bridges and crowded town moorings. Good fendering all round and solid bollards and cleats make the work in locks easier. With so little draft, the bottom and the propeller shaft deserve a look after a season, as canals are shallow at the edges. On a used Tarpon, check the engine hours, the cooling system and the interior joinery for damp. Many boats on French waterways have spent time in hire fleets, so ask about the history of the boat.
