CRN Ancona; cover, cost and conditions
CRN stands for Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali, a yard on the Adriatic in Ancona. Sanzio Nicolini founded it in 1963 and built yachts in metal from the start, in steel and aluminium, at a time when most other yards were still launching wooden boats. Early work included the 23 metre SuperConero and, in 1969, the 38.40 metre Bagheera. CRN joined the Ferretti Group in 1999 and was merged with Custom Line in 2001, which brought glassfibre production to the site. Ancona became the base of the group's superyacht division. The yard concentrates on one-off builds to the owner's brief, from around 32 to more than 85 metres, and its research department is working on ways to run superyachts on solar power and fuel cells.
Our model records list 15 designs, all motor yachts. Thirteen carry the CRN name, from the CRN 43 at 42.6 metres to the CRN 129 at 80 metres, and three are listed with a ship's name: CRN 54 Maraya, CRN 57 Romance and CRN 126 Blue Eyes. Two entries come from the Custom Line side, the Navetta 30 at 30.95 metres from 1999 and the Custom Line 97' at 29.5 metres from 2002. Build years run from 1999 to 2014, and none of the designs reaches into the most recent years. Eleven yachts exceed 50 metres, and five of them measure 60 metres or more: the CRN 60, the CRN 124 at 72 metres, the CRN 126 Blue Eyes, the CRN 128 and the CRN 129.
Yachts of this size are run by professional crews and kept to a maintenance plan rather than a calendar of weekends. For a buyer, the classification records, the refit history and the engine hours tell most of the story. Steel hulls call for a close look at the coatings and any corrosion creeping under the paint, and the joints where steel meets aluminium need attention, since the two metals react with each other in salt water. The two Custom Line entries come from the side of the business that brought glassfibre to the yard, so checks for osmosis and deck fittings belong on their list. Large yachts often change base between summer and winter, which makes the paperwork for each flag and cruising area as important as the technical survey.
