CW Hood Yacht Yard LLC; cover, cost and conditions

CW Hood Yachts works out of Marblehead, Massachusetts, founded by Chris Hood with his longtime friend and fellow boatbuilder Chris Stirling. The yard builds sail and power boats in composite and has revived two familiar New England names. The Wasque 26 began as an Alden Yachts design, and Hood took over its mould; the Maine builder Jarvis Newman was acquired outright, and its Downeast hulls now carry the powerboat line. The number in each name gives the length in feet.

Our records list 17 CW Hood models: ten motor yachts, two motorboats, three sailing boats and two sailing yachts. Five carry the Jarvis Newman name, three the Wasque name and seven the Hood name, from the 24 through the 32, 32-C and 32-R to the 43, 50 and 57, with the Katama 30 and the 32 Daysailer alongside. Every line starts in 2007 or later, and four run into the latest model years. Lengths span 7.04 metres (22 Wasque Concept, 24 Hood) to 17.45 metres (57 Hood).

The daysailers and small Wasques are boats for an afternoon on the bay, kept on a mooring or a trailer and rinsed after each outing. The Jarvis Newman and larger Hood motor yachts are berth boats for coastal cruising, where a Downeast hull feels at home in short, steep seas. In colder waters they spend the winter ashore, ideally in a shed, so that varnish and gelcoat come through the frost unharmed.
