Worth knowing
Dale Motor Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Dale Motor Yachts builds at Brunel Quay in Pembrokeshire, in the south-west corner of Wales. At the heart of the range sits the Dale Nelson 38, an aft cabin motor yacht of just over twelve metres that the specifications credit with up to 26 knots. When owners asked for something larger, the yard answered in 2003 with the Dale Classic 45, known for its rounded quarters and well balanced proportions. The later Dale 40 combines both hulls: the forward sections follow the Nelson 38 for a softer ride into a head sea, while the aft sections borrow the greater deadrise of the 45 for better manners in following seas. An aft cabin, a classic superstructure and a hull plainly drawn for open water mark out a Dale.
Our model records hold six designs: five motor yachts and one motorboat. The smallest is the Dale 23 at 7.6 metres, listed from 2012, followed by the Dale 28 at just over ten metres from 2016. The Dale Nelson 38 and Dale Nelson 40 both measure 12.12 metres; the Nelson 38 appears from 2004, the Nelson 40 from 2013. The Dale Classic 45 is the largest at 13.76 metres and is also listed from 2004, while the Classic 37 at 12.25 metres ran from 2019 to 2023. Five of the six designs reach the most recent build years, and only the Classic 37 has come to an end.
These are boats built for coastal passages and open stretches of water, and their owners tend to use them that way. With an aft cabin layout, engine access deserves a close look on any used boat: check mounts, shafts, stern glands and the service history of the diesels. Teak decks and handrails need regular care, and the windows and hatches of a wheelhouse boat should be checked for leaks after heavy weather. A sea trial in a little swell shows how well the hull form lives up to its reputation for comfort. Ask for the yard records too, since a builder still at work can often tell you how a particular hull was specified.

often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Dale 23 by Dale Motor Yachts series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Dale 28, Dale Classic 45, Dale Nelson 38 by Dale Motor Yachts and further series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
