De Groot Jachtwerf B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

De Groot builds motor yachts in Friesland. The yard lies at Grou in the middle of the Frisian lakes, and the boats are named after the lake next door, the Pikmeer. It began in 1963, when the grandfather of the present director started building steel motor cruisers, and the yard is still in family hands. Boats are built in small numbers to the first owner's wishes, so two of the same series are rarely fitted out alike. You recognise them by the curved steel hull with its soft sheer, the heavy rubbing strake and the tall squared off wheelhouse.

Our model records list 60 De Groot models: 56 motor yachts, three sailing yachts and one motorboat. Recorded build years start in 1965 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded: the Pikmeerkruiser from 38 to 50 in the OC version for an open cockpit, AC for an aft deck and FB for a flybridge, together with the Premier versions, the 13.50 AK and OK and the 1050 OK. From earlier years come the Beach Craft models and the Bahama 50. Lengths run from 7 to 17.4 metres, half the models between 11 and 14.3 metres.

Steel behaves differently from a plastic hull. It rusts wherever the protection is broken, and it does so by preference where nobody looks: under the sole, behind tanks, around through hull fittings. That is wear rather than an event, which is why a survey with plate thickness readings tells more about an older steel boat than its year of build does.
