Insurance for cable cars, chairlifts and ski lifts in Germany

Whether a gondola in the Alps, a chairlift in the Allgäu or a club run ski lift in the uplands: cable cars carry people above steep ground, in winter and summer. A broken rope, a gearbox failure or an injured passenger can cost a whole season. This page shows which insurance operators in Germany need and what matters most.

Insurance for cable cars and ski lifts

The question almost everyone asks first

Does my insurance pay if there is no snow?

Standard business interruption cover does not: it only pays when insured physical damage stops the lift, such as a gearbox failure or a fire in the station. Weather solutions for lack of snow exist, with fixed measuring points and thresholds, but they are rare and mostly for larger operators. For most lifts it matters more that machinery breakdown and loss of income after a technical failure are properly covered.

What goes wrong in this trade

  1. 01

    Injured passengers

A child slips off the chair, a skier falls when getting off, a hiker gets caught in a cabin door.

  2. 02

    Stoppage and evacuation

If the lift stops, passengers must be rescued from the air. Hypothermia, panic and claims follow.

  3. 03

    Machinery breakdown

Gearbox, drive motor or rope fail. Spare parts often come only from the manufacturer, with long lead times.

  4. 04

    Natural hazards

Storm, avalanches, debris flows, lightning and hail hit towers, stations and controls.

  5. 05

    Downtime in peak season

Every week of stoppage in February is missing from annual revenue while staff and loans continue.

  6. 06

    Piste machines and staff

Snow groomers, snowmobiles and work on the slope are dangerous for staff and guests.

The insurance you need

Essential

Business liability

Covers injury and property damage to passengers and third parties from lift, piste, car park and catering; the sum insured should be high.

Machinery breakdown

Machinery breakdown for drive, gearbox, rope, brakes and snowmaking against operating errors, material defects and short circuits.

Strongly advised

Commercial buildings

For valley and mountain stations, garages and workshop against fire, storm, snow load and lightning.

Business interruption

Replaces lost income when the installation stands still after insured physical or machinery damage.

Car insurance

For snow groomers, snowmobiles and service vehicles, including damage on the slope.

Depends on the business

D&O insurance

For directors of cable car companies, often with municipalities as shareholders.

What it costs: example prices

Cable cars are rated individually. Type of installation, capacity, age of the technology, sums insured and claims history set the premium. A club ski lift costs a fraction of a gondola.

Practical tips from your broker

  1. Choose a high liability sum; a serious accident with several passengers can cost millions.
  2. Have the rope explicitly included in machinery cover and clarify how wear is deducted.
  3. Match the indemnity period for loss of income to spare part lead times, often several months.
  4. Keep inspection reports and maintenance records to hand; insurers will ask for them.
  5. Check whether avalanches, debris flows and landslides are covered for buildings and machinery.
  6. Remember summer operation with hikers, mountain bikers and toboggan runs; it must be in the liability policy.
