Your first boat in Germany: six steps from licence to berth

Living in Germany and thinking about your first boat of your own? Here are six steps to sort out before the first trip, in the order you need them: which licence, which boat, buying, where it lives, insurance and the first season. The German rules are explained in English, with the tools we built for each step.

  1. The licence

On federal waterways and at sea you may drive a boat of up to 11.03 kW, which is 15 hp, without a licence. Above that you need the Sportbootführerschein, coastal (See) or inland (Binnen), from age 16. On the Rhine the limit is 5 hp, and Lake Constance has a licence of its own.

  2. Which boat

Inflatable, centre console, day cruiser or dinghy: it depends on your waters, how many people come along, and whether the boat goes on a trailer. Budget for the berth, winter storage, maintenance and insurance as well as the price.

  3. Buying

Look at a used boat ashore and afloat, with the engine running. Anything not written into the contract is hard to prove later. For a more expensive boat, pay a surveyor before you sign.

  4. Berth or trailer

Berths are in demand, often with waiting lists, so ask early. If you trailer the boat, you need a slipway nearby and the right driving licence for the car and trailer.

  5. Insurance

Liability insurance pays for damage you cause to others. German law does not make it compulsory in general, but almost every harbour asks for proof, and so do many countries you may visit. Hull cover protects your own boat; whether it is worth it depends on the value.

  6. The first season

Practise berthing and mooring in calm weather. Keep an eye on weather warnings, and once a month read what the season asks of the boat.

Associations and training

The German associations offer courses and clubs; their websites are mostly in German. We are not affiliated with them.

Can I drive a boat in Germany without a licence?

Yes, with up to 15 hp on most federal waterways and at sea. On the Rhine the limit is 5 hp, and many lakes have their own rules.

Does my foreign licence count in Germany?

Often, but not always. Check with the waterways authority for the waters you plan to use before you set out.
