The trade holds its course, no more

The German industry barometer for the first half of 2026 shows a trade that holds its course, with no crisis and no tailwind. The striking part is what is happening underneath: how far the market has split.

Market NAMMERT Assekuradeur GmbH

The German trade body asks its member companies at regular intervals how business is going. The May 2026 survey reads soberly. More than 60 percent of firms rate their situation worse than a year earlier, just under 10 percent better. That is not a crisis, the swings are too small for that. It is a market settling at a lower level.

More interesting than the average is how far the market has split. Small motorboats are under the most pressure, with almost half of firms reporting falling turnover. Boats over twelve metres are holding up considerably better, because their buyers depend less on interest rates and finance. Among mid sized sailing boats the previous year gain has broken off.

The used boat market is stable, and so is everything that counts as a service. Repair and maintenance, hire, sailing schools, marinas and surveyors all report steady business. These areas do not depend on whether someone can afford a new boat, only on existing boats continuing to be looked after and used.

Germany is the largest single market inside the EU for many builders, so this reading works as a rough proxy for northern European demand. A British or Dutch reader will recognise the pattern rather than the country. Entry level volume is weak, the larger end is firm, and aftersales carries the year.

More than 60% of businesses rate their situation as worse, just under 10% as better.

What this means for owners

One detail in these figures gets expensive in daily practice. When new boats are hard to sell and used boats stay in demand, used values move up. An owner who has not looked at the sum insured since buying may find it no longer matches what the boat is worth. Checking takes ten minutes.
