The ranges are wide and differ from region to region; in the south and on popular waters, expect the upper end. On top of the storage fee come craning, cradles and winterising. Staying afloat saves all that, but you run the risk of ice pressure and heavier fouling, and you need the harbour's consent.
In insurance terms, winter storage is not a break in cover. Check whether your normal hull cover continues through winter storage, time at the yard, craning and slipping. Fire in the shed, storm damage in the open, theft from the yard: all of them are insured events. A seasonal policy, where the premium is charged only for the cruising season, leaves the winter months from 1 November to 31 March without cover.
What is expected of you is reasonable care. A boat standing in the open without proper support, or with a boat cover flapping loose, is asking for trouble. Snow load on a winter cover that has not been cleared is the classic case, and that is where the line into gross negligence is quickly crossed.
