How the place works
Between mainland Australia and Tasmania the strait is shallow, and the Southern Ocean swell runs onto it from the west. Shallow ground under a long swell makes the sea short and steep, and lows pass through all year.
What breaks there
The 1998 Sydney to Hobart storm is the best known case, but the strait writes severe weather damage regularly without any race: rig, steering gear, superstructure. Ports of refuge lie at the ends, not in the middle.
