How the place works

The largest reef system in the world runs a good two thousand kilometres along the Australian east coast, with a channel between the coast and the outer reef that is narrow and shallow in places. The southeast trade holds steady, and the buoyage is laid out for commercial shipping.

What breaks there

Grounding on a reef head, mostly outside the channel and mostly at night or with a low sun. The authorities take damage to the reef itself very seriously, and separate claims can arise from that.

What this means for your policy

Besides hull cover, liability matters here: reef damage inside the Marine Park can trigger official restoration costs. Settle whether environmental damage and official requirements are insured.
