How the place works
Sixteen locks over a good hundred and seventy kilometres, some with almost twenty-five metres of lift. In the large chambers the turbulence during filling becomes an issue, and the waiting berths are often unprotected from wind and the wash of commercial traffic.
What breaks there
Most damage happens not in the chamber but while berthing in front of it and waiting alongside: topsides, rubbing strake, guardrail. A second boat or a sheet pile wall is almost always involved.
What this means for your policy
This is the textbook case for the liability or hull question: damage to the other boat is liability, damage to your own gelcoat is hull. Anyone running this route should have both, otherwise they pay for their own side.
