How the place works
The channel between Madagascar and the mainland is a cyclone track from November to April, and the Mozambique Current runs south with shifting eddies. Wind against current builds a steep sea over a short fetch here, and ports of refuge are rare.
What breaks there
The passage is part of the route from Asia to South Africa, and it is sailed between two cyclones. Anyone missing the window collects severe weather damage or has to stay in a harbour that is not one.
