A. H. Moody & Son Limited; cover, cost and conditions
A. H. Moody & Son grew up at Swanwick on the River Hamble in southern England. John Moody founded the business there in 1827, at first repairing and overhauling vessels. When he died in 1880 his son Alexander took over and began building small dinghies. The first timber sailing yachts followed in 1935, and from 1965 the yard worked in glassfibre. From 1973 to 2003 Moody worked closely with the builder of Princess motor yachts. In 2007 the German HanseYachts AG bought the brand and moved production to Germany. The designs in our list come from the Swanwick years, the Halberdier going back as far as 1964.
Our model records list eleven sailing yachts from 11 to 19.2 metres. The Carbineer line spans five sizes, the 40, 44, 46, 52 and 63; the Grenadier line four, the 119, 134, 158 and 183. The Halberdier and the Moody 52 Seadancer complete the list. The Halberdier is the oldest, from 1964, followed in 1966 by the Carbineer 44 and 46 and in 1968 by the Seadancer. The Grenadiers appear from 1978 and 1979, the Carbineer 40, 52 and 63 from 1980 and 1982. The Moody 52 Carbineer runs longest, to 1991. The 63 Carbineer is the largest at 19.2 metres, and five yachts exceed 15 metres. None reaches the recent build years.
A Moody of this period is now somewhere between 35 and more than 60 years old, and its condition depends almost entirely on how it has been kept. Standing rigging should be renewed at sensible intervals regardless of how it looks, and chainplates and their deck penetrations deserve a close look. Older glassfibre hulls can show osmosis, which a moisture survey will reveal. Windows, teak decks and original tanks are the usual places where age shows. Yachts of this size suit long passages, and a well-found example can still take its owners far.
