Beckerbåt is a Swedish yard based on Lidingö, the island just outside Stockholm. The boat designer Harry Becker founded it, and his son Jan Becker, a designer too, later took charge. From 1991 the yachts also appeared under the name Excel Yachts of Sweden, which is why the designs in our records carry the Excel name. The Excel 32 was drawn by Jan Becker: a masthead sloop with a bulbed fin keel and a free standing spade rudder. The hull is just under ten metres long and a little over 3.3 metres wide. Of a displacement of roughly 3,600 kilograms, about 1,650 kilograms is ballast, and the sail area comes to just over 43 square metres.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts of 9.75 metres. The Excel 319 is listed from 1988 to 2003, the longer running of the two, and the Excel 32 from 1990 to 2001. One reference directory dates the start of the Excel 32 to 1991, the year the Excel name was introduced. Neither line reaches the most recent build years. Together they span some fifteen build years, from the late eighties to just after the turn of the century. Anyone looking for an Excel today is buying second hand, and the boats on offer are somewhere between twenty and almost forty years old.
A Swedish cruiser of this age rewards a careful survey. Check the keel bolts and the joint between bulb and hull, and look at the spade rudder bearings for play, because a free standing blade carries all its load on the stock. Standing rigging older than ten years is usually due for replacement whatever it looks like. Many Excels have spent their lives in the Baltic, with fresh or brackish water and long winters ashore, which tends to be kind to gelcoat but hard on teak decks and window seals. Ask for the engine log, and find out whether the original instruments have been replaced or simply added to.
