ABC Kungälv; cover, cost and conditions
ABC Kungälv refers to the ABC-fabrikerna, the factories of AB Bröderna Claesson in the town of Kungälv in western Sweden. Between 1909 and 1976 they turned out sports and leisure goods, sailing boats among them. The name most people remember is Triss. Lill Triss, the Trissjolle and the Triss Giggen were open dinghies built to be unsinkable. Per Brohäll drew the Trissjolle as a two-person boat that could be sailed, rowed or pushed by an outboard, and the name is a nod to those three ways of moving. Cabin boats followed: the six-metre Triss Magnum and the Stor Triss, the first version painted blue and white, the MK2 red and white. Production was wound down in the early seventies and stopped in Kungälv in 1976.
Our model records hold two designs, both listed as sailing boats. The Triss 710 measures 7.1 metres and is entered for build years 1968 to 1976. The Stor Triss MK II is recorded at 5.25 metres and runs from 1974 to 1982, while a Swedish source gives the Stor Triss as 5.70 metres, so the figures do not quite agree. Neither line reaches the recent build years, which means the youngest boat is now more than forty years old. Anyone looking for a Triss today will only find one second hand.
A small glassfibre boat from this period has usually seen several owners. Look at the deck to hull joint, the chainplates and the rudder fittings, and press the laminate around the keel for soft spots. Original sails are rarely worth keeping, but the spars often are. Both designs are light enough to trail, so the condition of the road trailer, its bearings and its lights matters as much as the hull. Kept dry over winter and sailed on lakes or sheltered coast, these boats still give plenty of pleasure.
