ACVA-Bat; cover, cost and conditions

ACVA-Båt AB was a Swedish yard whose story is tied to the designer Lars Olof Norlin. In the mid-1960s Norlin's Allegro 27 won a design competition sponsored by the Koster Class Association, and ACVA-Båt put it into production in 1967. The Allegro 33 is also a Norlin design, as are the Adagio and the Furioso. The musical names, from Adagio to Vivace, make the family easy to recognise. The boats were built in glassfibre, the Allegro 27 with a solid hull and a balsa-cored deck, and the Allegro 33 carries a masthead sloop rig.

Our model records list seven designs: six sailing yachts and one small sailing boat. The oldest entries, the Adagio, the Allegro 27 and the Vivace, start in 1967. The Allegro 27 at 8.03 metres runs to 1991, as do the Allegro 33 from 1972 and the Allegro 33.1 from 1985, both at 9.81 metres. The Vivace shares that length and ends in 1978. The Adagio measures 8.15 metres and is listed until 1981, the Furioso at 7.64 metres from 1974 to 1982. The Duo is the odd one out, a 3.2 metre sailing boat built from 1973 to 1980. None of the lines reach the recent build years; the last entries stop in 1991.

Every ACVA boat on the market today is a used one, and many hulls are forty or fifty years old. Balsa-cored decks deserve a moisture meter around the fittings, because water that gets past a tired bedding compound can soften the core. Chainplates, keel bolts and the rudder bearing are the other classic checkpoints on boats of this age. The upside is a simple layout and rigging that a capable owner can maintain without a yard. Many of these boats have been sailed through the Swedish skerries for decades and still turn up in good order, often with a long line of careful owners behind them.
