Worth knowing
Aerodyne Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Aerodyne Yachts is based in Hytölä, near Jyväskylä in central Finland. A group of aerospace and marine specialists set the company up in 2005 and in the same year took over the designs, moulds and tooling of Aerodyne Technology in South Africa, where naval architect Rodger Martin had developed the line since 1983. The Aerodyne 38 had been built in Cape Town from 2000. Hulls are made by heat-cured epoxy infusion, a method borrowed from aircraft work that gives a light and stiff structure. The yard calls its boats detuned thoroughbreds: quick, yet laid out for short-handed crews who value stability and comfort on coastal passages, offshore or around the world.
Our model records list six designs, all sailing yachts and all with build years from 2002 to 2022. The Aerodyne 35 opens the range at 10.5 metres, followed by the Aerodyne 38 at 11.48 metres and the Aerodyne 43 at 12.8 metres. The Aerodyne 47 appears three times, as Blue Water, GT and RS, each at 14.2 metres. Four of the six entries are longer than twelve metres, and none of the lines continues into the most recent build years in our data, which stop at 2022.
An epoxy laminate of this kind rewards careful inspection more than heavy repair. On a used Aerodyne it is worth looking at the keel attachment and the surrounding structure after any grounding, at the chainplates, and at the condition of the rig, since a light and fast boat puts real loads on mast and standing rigging. Sails and electronics on these yachts are often of high quality and make up a large part of what is on board. Because the boats were designed for short-handed sailing, check that the autopilot, reefing lines and controls led to the cockpit work as intended. The history of a boat built in South Africa or Finland should be documented, ideally with a survey.
