African River Kraft; cover, cost and conditions
African River Kraft, better known as ARK, is a South African maker of inflatable boats with its roots in white water rafting. According to the company, its designs are developed with white water paddlers and engineers and are used on commercial rafting trips across southern Africa. The boats are built from PVC coated polyester fabric in several weights, and the range covers rafts, swiftwater rescue boats, fishing boats and small solo craft such as the Gecko and Minnow. Most names combine a letter code with a three digit number that usually gives the length in centimetres: an AL 320 is 3.2 metres long.
Our model records list 26 African River Kraft models: 25 inflatables and one listed as a motor boat. All are recorded from the 2018 build year, and 23 of the 26 continue into current production. Lengths range from 1.1 to 5.4 metres, half of them between 3 and 4.2 metres. The middle holds the CRR 375 and CRX at 3.75 metres, the FD 350 family at 3.5 metres and the KN 365 rescue boat. The largest are the 420 models at 4.2 metres and the KZ series up to the KZ 550 at 5.4 metres.
These are working boats as much as leisure craft: dragged over rocks and run through rapids. Value depends on the fabric and seams, the floor, the valves and the rowing fittings, and on motorised setups the outboard. Age counts, but a well stored raft from 2018 can be in better shape than a newer one used every day of the season.
