Alcort Sailboats; cover, cost and conditions

Alcort takes its name from the nicknames of two Connecticut men, Alexander "Red" Bryan and Cortlandt "Bud" Heyniger. Working in Waterbury and Woodbury, they launched their first boat in 1947: the Sailfish, a flat plywood board with a sail. The Sunfish followed in 1952 and gained a small cockpit well in the deck. Wooden kits later gave way to fibreglass hulls, and in 1969 the partners sold the business to the American Machine and Foundry Company, after which the boats carried the AMF Alcort name. What marks the brand is the small open dinghy that is easy to get to the water and works for beginners as well as for club racing.

Our model records hold a single design under this name, the Force 5. Fred Scott and Jack Evans drew it in 1972 for AMF Alcort as a challenger to the Laser, and they gave it an unusually generous set of sail controls for a boat of its size. It appears as an open sailing dinghy of 4.2 metres, built from 1973 to 1980. The Sailfish and the Sunfish are not listed under Alcort in our records. That makes even the youngest Force 5 on file more than 45 years old, so any boat on the market today has passed through several owners and a good many seasons.

A fibreglass dinghy of this age is usually sound in principle, but the details deserve a close look. Press around the deck and the hull for soft spots, check the joint between deck and hull, and look at the daggerboard trunk and the rudder fittings for cracks. The many control lines that set the Force 5 apart run through blocks and cleats that wear out, so expect to replace some of them. Spars should be checked for corrosion at fittings, and an old sail may be tired. Most of these boats live on a dolly or a trailer and sail on lakes, reservoirs and sheltered coastal water, often from a club slipway.
