Aldeburgh Boat Yard; cover, cost and conditions
Aldeburgh Boat Yard sits in Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast, where the River Alde runs past the town just before it reaches the sea. The yard is one of the builders of the Loch Long One Design and now trades as Demon Yachts. The class itself is Scottish: in 1937 James Croll adapted the Swedish Stjärnbåt, and members of the Loch Long Sailing Club launched the boat to mark the coronation of George VI. A Loch Long is easy to recognise by its slim wooden hull with a counter stern, its sloop rig with a permanent backstay and the open cockpit of a traditional keelboat. The early boats were carvel built, and since 1994 strip planked hulls have also been admitted to the class.
Our model records list exactly one design under Aldeburgh Boat Yard: the Loch Long as an open sailing boat, built from 1957 to 1964 and 6.4 metres long. None of it reaches into recent build years. The source gives the class a waterline of 4.65 metres, a beam of 1.78 metres and a hull weight of 544 kilograms. As a one design, every builder works to the same measurements, so boats from Aldeburgh race on equal terms with those from the Clyde. Active fleets sail with Aldeburgh Yacht Club on the Alde and with Cove Sailing Club on the Clyde.
A wooden keelboat of this age lives or dies by its maintenance. Planking, keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull deserve a close look before every season, and paint and varnish need regular attention. When buying a used Loch Long, a survey by someone who knows carvel construction pays off, as does a check of the mast step and chainplates, which carry the full load of the rig. The boats are mostly raced in club fleets, so sails and fittings often show the wear of many starts. A well kept boat from the late fifties or early sixties is still sailed hard on the river today.
