Alerion Yachts is a sailboat brand from Rhode Island, built around the idea of the relaxed daysail. It began in 1991 with the Alerion Express 28, drawn by the designer Carl Schumacher. Garry Hoyt shaped the brand in the years that followed and added his Hoyt Jib Boom, a boom on the headsail that makes life easier for a small crew or a solo sailor. The first hulls came from Holby Marine in Bristol before production moved to a larger builder in nearby Warren. Building has stayed in Rhode Island ever since, most recently with a team at Waterline Systems who have worked on these boats for many years. An Alerion is easy to spot by the classic lines of a daysailer built for pleasure rather than for race results.
Our model records list four sailing yachts from the brand: the Alerion 20, 28, 30 and 33, all of them starting with the 2018 build year. The smallest is the Alerion 20 at 6.09 metres, the largest the Alerion 33 at 10.06 metres, with the 28 at 8.61 and the 30 at 9.17 metres in between. These are fibreglass boats with fine finishing, and their condition depends a great deal on how carefully the varnish, the deck hardware and the running rigging have been looked after. When buying a used Alerion, check the standing rigging and chainplates, the fittings of the jib boom, the age and shape of the sails and the state of the keel attachment. The engine is usually small, so its service record and the condition of the drive matter more than the hours alone. Many owners keep these boats on a mooring in sheltered bays, on large lakes or along protected coasts, and sail them for an afternoon rather than for long passages. A boat that has spent its winters under cover will usually show it in the brightwork.
