Worth knowing
Allied Boat Co. Inc.; cover, cost and conditions
Allied Boat Co. Inc. was set up on 9 February 1962 in Catskill, New York, as a small builder of fibreglass sailing boats. Its first design was the 30 foot Seawind, drawn by Thomas Gillmer. Later the yard worked with Sparkman & Stephens and Bill Luders, and its range ran from 30 to 42 feet, including the Greenwich 24 and the Allied 42 XL-2. The business ran until 1981. The Chance 30-30 stands apart from that range: Britton Chance drew her as the yard's only dedicated racing yacht, clearly shaped by the IOR half tonners of the time. She is recognised by her masthead sloop rig, fin keel and free standing spade rudder.
Our model records list a single design for Allied Boat Co. Inc.: the Chance 30-30 sailing yacht, built from 1971 to 1978 and 9.32 metres long. Nothing reaches into recent build years. The source gives a waterline of 25 feet, a beam of 10 feet, a displacement of 11,200 lb and about 6,500 lb of ballast. That puts the ballast ratio well above half, a figure that points to a stiff boat. The source itself dates production from 1971 to 1974, while our records carry boats up to 1978. Every Chance 30-30 is now a used boat with around fifty years on the hull.
A fifty year old racer asks for a careful survey. The keel bolts and the area around the fin deserve particular attention, since a deep fin carries heavy loads every time the boat is pressed hard. The spade rudder stock and its bearings should be checked for play, and the deck for soft spots around the chainplates and stanchion bases. Many of these boats have spent years in club racing, so the rig and sails may have been changed or upgraded. Owners today use the Chance 30-30 both for weekend racing and for coastal cruising.
