Alpa; cover, cost and conditions
The name Alpa is an acronym for Azienda Lavorazioni Plastiche Affini, roughly a plastics processing works. Danilo Cattadori registered it as a sole trader in 1956 at Fiesco-Offanengo in Lombardy, a long way inland. It was among the first Italian yards to use glassfibre for boats, and it worked with well known designers: John Illingworth, Sparkman & Stephens and Van de Stadt all drew for Alpa. The Alpa 11.50, one of the yard's early plastic boats, came from Sparkman & Stephens. Cattadori left in 1971 and the business closed at the end of the seventies. Many model names simply give the length in metres, which makes the boats easy to place.
Our model records list nine designs: five sailing yachts and four smaller sailing boats. The earliest entries start in 1964 and the last ones end in 1985, so there are no current build years. The yachts include the Alpa 11.50 at 11.56 metres, the Alpa 12.70 at 12.75 metres, the A 36, the A 42 at 12.33 metres and an entry listed simply as Alpa at 14.7 metres, the longest boat here. Below them sit the Alpa 7.40 at 7.45 metres and three boats under seven metres: the Alpa 5.50, the Alpa 21 and the A 21. Most lines first appear in the records between 1968 and 1973.
Early glassfibre hulls were often laid up thick, but after fifty years the weak points lie elsewhere. A buyer should look at the deck core around fittings, the keel bolts and the chainplates, and check the hull for osmosis. Original teak and spars may have been replaced several times, so the history of rig and sails is worth asking about. Many Alpas still sail in the Adriatic and on Italian lakes, and owners tend to restore rather than modernise. A boat with paperwork from earlier refits is easier to judge than one without.
