Alpacka Raft makes packrafts, light inflatable boats that roll up small enough to ride in a backpack. Sheri Tingey and her son Thor founded the company in 2000, after Thor came back from a 600 mile packrafting traverse of Alaska's Brooks Range with ideas for a better boat; the designs are Sheri's. In 2007 the family moved from Alaska to Mancos, Colorado, where each raft is still made by hand. Fat tubes, a compact shape and animal names such as Caribou, Llama, Yak, Gnarwhal, Mule, Oryx and Wolverine mark them out.
Our model records list 18 Alpacka designs, all from 2018 and all running into the latest build years. Sixteen are filed as inflatables, while the Classic Llama and the Oryx appear as motorboats. The Classic line has the Alpaca, Llama and Yak, the Expedition S, M and L, the Gnarwhal M, L and XL, the Wolverine M and L, joined by the Explorer 42, Forager, Caribou, Mule, Ranger, Scout and Oryx. Sizes run from the 1.93 metre Scout to the 3.28 metre Oryx.
A packraft goes where roads end: carried in on foot, inflated on a gravel bar, paddled down a river and walked out again. Rinse it after salt or silty water, dry it before packing and keep it out of strong sun when not in use. A small repair kit belongs in every pack.
