Alphena Yachts is a French yard founded by Bruno Mottet in 2007. His aim was cruising yachts that carry the reliability and handling of offshore racing boats. The team included the offshore sailor Loïck Peyron and the naval architects Tanguy Le Bihan and Antoine Fritsch. The first model, which also set the style, was the Alphena One, a sporty 8.5 metre keelboat drawn by Tanguy Le Bihan. Instead of a diesel she was fitted with an electric drive from Kräutler, an early choice for a small cruising boat. The twelve metre Alphena Three followed in a handful of examples. In 2012 the XCO Development Group, then also owner of Latitude 46, took over the yard.
Our model records hold one design for Alphena Yachts: the Alphena One sailing yacht, built from 2009 to 2015 and 8.49 metres long. No line reaches into recent build years. The source describes the Alphena One as a light, fast one design with a draft of 1.60 metres, laid out for a crew of two to six and, in the yard's view, fine to sail single handed. According to the source she was built from 2008 to around 2013, while our records list build years up to 2015. She is a relatively young boat from a small series that now changes hands only on the used market.
The electric drive is what sets the Alphena One apart, and it shapes what to look at before buying. The age and health of the battery bank, the charging equipment and the motor controller matter more here than engine hours do on a diesel boat. Ask for records of how the batteries were stored over winter. The hull and keel of a light, fast boat deserve the same attention as on any performance yacht, especially after a grounding. Spare parts for a small series can take time to source, so a complete set of documents and drawings adds real value.
