Aluboot is a Dutch yard in Hindeloopen in Friesland, on the shore of the IJsselmeer. Borneman senior founded it on 11 August 1975. The name says it all: the yard builds motor and sailing yachts with aluminium hulls. Besides yachts, Hindeloopen turns out rescue boats for the KNRM, the Dutch lifeboat service. Later years brought large sailing yachts such as the Semi Classic 68 of 2004, drawn by Hoek Design, which pairs classic lines with modern construction. An Aluboot is easy to tell by its welded metal hull.
Our model records hold two designs from the yard's early years, both listed as sailing boats. The Alu 650 measures 6.5 metres, the Alu 730 7.3 metres, and both are entered for build years 1976 to 1983, starting a year after the yard was founded. Neither line reaches the recent build years, so the youngest boat is now more than forty years old. The later large yachts and the rescue boats are not in our records. Anyone looking for an Alu 650 or 730 today will find one second hand.
Aluminium hulls are tough, but they have their own enemy: galvanic corrosion. On a used boat, check the sacrificial anodes, look for pitting near through-hull fittings and around stainless steel parts, and make sure no copper-based antifouling has ever been used. Ask whether the electrical system is isolated from the hull. Welds around the keel and chainplates deserve a close look. Well looked after, an aluminium boat from the seventies can easily see another few decades on the water.
