American Sail Inc; cover, cost and conditions

American Sail has been building sailboats in the United States since 1988. Its original model is the American 14.6, a fibreglass dinghy with closed cell flotation and anodised aluminium spars. It was conceived as a stable, dry daysailer for beginners and for anyone after relaxed sailing: room for four, a kick-up rudder with tiller, a centreboard for shallow water and a bracket for a small outboard. It leaves the factory on its own trailer. The larger American 18 follows the same idea with a self bailing cockpit, storage lockers, kick-up rudder and centreboard, adjustable jib tracks and Harken hardware. Broad open cockpits and a simple sloop rig make the boats easy to recognise.

Our model records list three designs: two open sailing boats and one listed as a sailing catamaran. The American 14.6 measures 4.42 metres, the American 18 reaches 5.41 metres, and the American Pennant Daysailer is the smallest at 3.05 metres. All three start in our records with build year 2018 and continue into the most recent build years. The 14.6, however, has been in production since 1988, so older examples were on the water well before the start year shown in the records suggests. No design is longer than 5.5 metres, and all of them fit on a road trailer.

A fibreglass daysailer with aluminium spars is easy to keep. Rinse the spars and fittings after salt water, check the shrouds and the forestay for broken strands and watch the mast step for corrosion where aluminium meets stainless. The kick-up rudder and the centreboard take knocks in shallow water, so pivots and edges deserve a look each spring. Closed cell flotation should be dry and intact. Many of these boats spend their lives on a trailer, so tyres, bearings and lights matter as much as the hull. On a used 14.6 or 18, check the hull identification number to date the boat, since early boats go back to the late eighties.

still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the American 14.6, American 18 by American Sail Inc series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the American Pennant Daysailer by American Sail Inc series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
