Amiot Naval; cover, cost and conditions

The Amiot name goes back to the Amiot Marine yard in Dinard on the coast of Brittany. The yard built small sailing boats in the 1960s, at a time when French boatbuilding was moving from wood to composites. Its best-known design is the Frehel, drawn by the naval architect Henri Garreta as a bateau de pêche-promenade, a boat for both fishing and gentle cruising. Hulls were laid up in solid polyester without a core, rigged as Bermudan sloops and fitted with a fixed ballast keel. The result is a small, sturdy boat meant as much for a morning with fishing lines as for an afternoon sail along the coast.

Our model records list four designs from build years 1966 to 1977: three open sailing boats and one sailing yacht. The Super Frehel is the earliest entry, from 1966, and measures 6.25 metres; the Frehel follows from 1967 at 5.17 metres, and both run until 1977. The Bihannic is the smallest boat at 4.3 metres, listed from 1968 to 1976. The Aigue Marine, at 8.05 metres, is the only sailing yacht of the brand and spans the same years from 1968 to 1976. None of the lines carries on past the seventies, so every boat of the brand is now roughly half a century old.

Solid polyester laminate from that era is thick and forgiving, but fifty years leave their marks. Check the hull for osmosis blisters, look at the keel bolts and the joint around the keel, and tap the deck for soft spots where fittings may have let water into any plywood or balsa reinforcement. Original standing rigging is almost certainly past its life and should be replaced if no records exist. Many of these boats are kept by enthusiasts who have restored them with care, while others have sat in a yard for years; the difference shows quickly in the deck hardware, the sails and the outboard bracket. A small Bihannic or Frehel travels easily on a trailer, so the trailer deserves a look too.

What this means for the cover

For the Frehel, Super Frehel, Aigue Marine by Amiot Naval and 1 more series there is no list price

left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Frehel, Super Frehel, Bihannic by Amiot Naval series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the Aigue Marine by Amiot Naval series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
