Worth knowing
Ansa Sailing AB; cover, cost and conditions
Ansa yachts were built in Sweden by Rex Marin, trading as Ansa Sailing AB, to designs by Ocke Mannerfelt. The Ansa 42 appeared in 1979 as a cruising yacht meant for quick passages, and the larger Ansa 47 followed in 1984. They share the same basic recipe: a glassfibre hull, a fin keel with a free-standing spade rudder and a fractional sloop rig, where the forestay meets the mast below the masthead. Stability and space below decks mattered more to the design than racing results, which gives the boats the recognisable look of a fast family cruiser from around 1980.
Our model records list three designs, all of them sailing yachts. The Ansa 42 at 12.7 metres is the oldest entry, starting with build year 1978 and running until 1989. The Ansa 47 measures 14.3 metres and appears from 1981 to 1989, while the Ansa 38 at 11.4 metres is listed from 1982 to 1989. All three lines therefore end in the same year, and none reaches into recent build years. No design falls below eleven metres, so the brand sits firmly among offshore cruising yachts of 38 to 47 feet.
Anyone looking at a used Ansa today is looking at a boat more than 35 years old. The spade rudder deserves close attention: bearings, stock and the blade itself should be checked for play and water ingress. On a fin keel, the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull are worth a survey, ideally with the boat out of the water. Standing rigging of that age has usually been replaced at least once, and records of when it was done tell a buyer a great deal. With their emphasis on interior volume, these yachts suit couples and families who cruise for weeks rather than weekends, and a well equipped example can be set up for longer passages.
