Appleyard; cover, cost and conditions
Appleyard Lincoln came from Ely, out in the Cambridgeshire Fens, and built glass fibre cabin cruisers in the early sixties. The name most people link with the yard is the Elysian. According to the Broads register, the Elysian 27 was Appleyards' first design, drawn by Hugh Easton as a GRP hull with an aft cockpit and an inboard engine, aimed squarely at rivers and lakes such as the Norfolk Broads, where plenty of them still run today. Some hulls were sold on their own to other builders, who added wooden superstructures of their own. When Appleyard Lincoln closed, J. G. Meakes of Marlow and Bounty Boats of Brundall carried on with the moulds, which is why some Elysians carry another builder's name.
Our model records hold two boats under the Appleyard name. The Elysian 27 motor cruiser is 8.2 metres long and is listed for the build years 1962 to 1984; the Broads register counts 85 boats of the first version and another 31 of the second, also sold as the Madeira 27. The other entry is the Seadog sailing yacht at 9.14 metres, recorded from 1965 to 1986. The Seadog is a ketch designed by Reg Freeman and was built with either bilge keels or a deep keel. Both lines closed decades ago, so any example on the market today has a long history behind it.
An Elysian of this age is a simple boat, but the details matter. Look at the joint between hull and deck, at any wooden superstructure added by a later builder, and at the condition of the inboard and its shaft. On a Seadog, check the keel bolts, the bilge keel roots and the state of both masts and the standing rigging. Paperwork that shows which yard finished the boat helps, since hulls left Ely to be completed elsewhere. Elysians are mostly found on the Broads and other inland waters, while the Seadog was built to handle coastal passages and open water.

Series by Appleyard, build years and cover
Seadog is a sailing yacht from Appleyard, built from 1965 to 1986.
Elysian 27 is a motor yacht from Appleyard, built from 1962 to 1984.
For the Seadog and Elysian 27 by Appleyard series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Seadog by Appleyard series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Elysian 27 by Appleyard series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
